The South Florida Metropolitan Area
The South Florida Metropolitan Area, officially the "Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach Metropolitan Area," but more simply "South Florida," and sometimes "The Gold Coast," includes the three counties of the southeastern part of the State of Florida, Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. They are also the most populous counties in Florida. The county seats are, respectively, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach.
The population of Southeast Florida is mostly confined to a strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Everglades, never more than 20 miles wide, and in some areas only 5 miles wide, east to west. Except for the New York metropolitan area, South Florida is longer than any other urbanized area in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the area's land area was 1,116 square miles, and the population was almost five million people.
