Coconut Creek was originally a wilderness that served as a hunting ground for the Seminole Indians. Later on, as pioneers settled in the area, it was converted into farmland yielding crops of tomatoes, strawberries, beans and peppers. Eventually, real estate developer Robert E. Bateman purchased some of the acreage and in the 1960's the area seceded from Pompano Beach. In 1962, Coconut Creek was officially incorporated and Mr. Bateman named the city after the beautiful coconut trees that graced the area.
Today, Coconut Creek is a thriving city known as The Butterfly Capital of the World. The city has received numerous awards and was titled a 2013 Playful City U.S.A. Community.
